Hello everybody! I hope you didn't miss me too much these last couple days. I am guilty of taking a bit of a vacation as I began my second quarter of college over at UCR, but I am back and better than ever; and very ready to continue reviewing and commentating on the great movies of today. This coming sunday (the 12th) is a very special day in the movie world; for it marks the unofficial beginning of the award season. Next to basketball season, the movie award season is my favorite time of year, and I always pay a great deal of attention to it. This sunday is the 71st annual Golden Globes ceremony put on by the Hollywood foreign press, and next to the Oscars themselves, is the biggest movie award show of the year in my opinion. As a bit of a disclaimer.... I personally do not take this award show that seriously. A Golden Globe holds about 1/10th the prestige of an Oscar, and therefore is not as important to me as it is to others. That said it is still a very entertaining award show, and a million times better than the trash that is say......The Peoples choice awards? I understand the reason for having a show that is predicated on having ordinary people select the winners, but you can not say that that trophy has any legitimacy when the majority of the people voting saw a grand total of 7 movies that year. Anyways, although I do not consider them the Oscars, the Golden Globes are still a large part of the overall award season, and my job as a film pundit is to inform you of my opinions as to who will win, and who I think should win. Now I am not a big watcher of TV so I will leave out most of the categories referring to television simply because I don't consider myself an expert on Tv shows. With that said, here are my official predictions for this years annual Golden Globes awards show.
MOVIES
Best Drama
1. 12 Years a Slave
2. Captain Phillips
3. Gravity
4. Philomena
5. Rush
Who Should Win: 12 Years a Slave
Who Will Win: 12 Years a Slave
- One of my favorite movies of 2013, 12 Years a Slave is such an emotional masterpiece that it would be hard for the foreign press to select anything else. The one that scares me is Gravity, simply because of how revolutionary and groundbreaking the film is. That said it lacks the screenplay, acting, and overall story that would lead me to put it over 12 Years a Slave at this point. Unfortunately I was unable to see Rush while it was out, but I have heard good things about it; so if it is nominated for an Oscar I will find someway to see it. Overall though I believe 12 Years is going to win a couple awards, and this should definitely be one of them.
Best Musical/Comedy
1. American Hustle
2. Her
3. Inside Lleweyn Davis
4. Nebraska
5. The Wolf of Wall Street
Who should win: The Wolf of Wall Street
Who will win: American Hustle
- From this list, I have only seen WOWS and American hustle and I loved them both. That said, Wolf was my favorite movie of 2013 so naturally I am going to think it should win. American Hustle was very good but was disengaging at times where WOWS was a high octane joy ride the whole three hours. The ensemble cast in American Hustle all performed great, looked great, and are known for being great; which is why I think they will ultimately win this award. That entire film just screams Golden Globes bait. Tomorrow I am planning on seeing Her at my local theater, and if its amazing and blows my mind then I will post something about it before the show starts. Also have no fear, before the Oscars on March 2nd I will have seen every movie up for an award and will have concrete answers and predictions for that show. But this is not the Oscars. So that ain't the case.
Best Director
1. Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
2. Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips
3. Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave
4. Alexander Payne, Nebraska
5. David O. Russel, American Hustle
Who should win: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
Who will win: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
- Despite the issues that I had with Gravity, there is one thing that I cannot deny about it: it was groundbreaking. The direction that Cuaron gave throughout this film was just marvelous, and no other film on that list achieved anything cinematically speaking like Gravity did. I think this category is the safest one to call a lock at this point, and I feel pretty confident saying that as Nebraska was the only nomination that I hadn't seen; and I think its safe to say that it was not better then Gravity. If 12 Years is racking up awards by this time in the show then do not be shocked if McQueen pulls it out, but even then he doesn't deserve to beat Cuaron.
Best Actress in a Drama
Who will win: Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
- Trust me.
Best Actor in a Drama
1. Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
2. Idris Elba, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
3. Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips
4. Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
5. Robert Redford, All is Lost
Who should win: Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
Who will win: Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
- Wow. The best actor race at the Oscars is easily going to be the most stacked field maybe in the history of the Academy. There are so many worthy actors and only five spots. Who do you choose and who do you knock off? I'm glad I don't have to choose because I would spend many sleepless nights trying to build up the courage to say no to the great Robert Redford.....But oh well. Ejiofor gets the nod here because of the steam that 12 years is garnering. Sure you can give it to Hanks, but quite frankly that pick is boring as he could win it every year. The movie I regret missing the most this year was Dallas Buyers Club because I heard it was just fabulous, but the closest showing of it was over an hour away and I just did not have the time to go see it. I love Idris Elba, but I think there is just no denying Ejiofor what I think is his award to lose.
Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy
1. Christian Bale, American Hustle
2. Bruce Dern, Nebraska
3. Leonardo Dicaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
4. Oscar Isaac, Inside Llewyn Davis
5. Joaquin Phoenix, Her
Who should win: Leonardo Dicaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
Who will win: Christian Bale, American Hustle
- This one I had to think about. Leo's performance was my personal favorite, but I am not sold that the foreign press thought so highly of his movie as a whole. Watch out for Bruce Dern as he easily could snatch that up without anyone noticing. Oscar Isaac is too unknown, and Phoenix doesn't have a great relationship with academies in general. Bale gets the nod due to the fact that American Hustle went over real well with the critics, and Bale was great as always. Honestly though, I am not very confident with my pick. This ones a toss up.
Best Supporting Actress
1. Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine
2. Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
3. Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave
4. Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
5. June Squibb, Nebraska
Who should win: Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
Who will win: Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
- Did you really think i'd pick anyone else?
Best Supporting Actor
1. Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips
2. Daniel Bruhl, Rush
3. Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
4. Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave
5. Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
- Another tough one. Fassbender is my favorite actor, and he was absolutely brilliant in 12 years a slave to the point where I did not even recognize him. He truly is a magnificent talent. The only reason I do not think he wins is that I have heard nothing but great things about Leto as the transgender AIDS victim in Dallas Buyers Club. Academies love transformation stories, and Jared Leto playing a sickened woman might be too much for the Fass to overcome this year. By the way Bradley Cooper remains to be under rated as an actor, but is still clearly behind Fassbender and Leto this year.
Best Animated Film
1. The Croods
2. Despicable Me 2
3. Frozen
Who should win: Despicable Me 2
Who will win: Frozen
- To all you weird people that thought Frozen was the best animated film since the Lion King....well.....this ones for you I guess. I saw Frozen and wasn't all that impressed to be truly honest. It had some cute parts, but was not as funny or as entertaining as those minions from Despicable Me 2. Man that was a good time. Although something about Frozen seemed to stick with audiences as it was number one at the box office last week AGAIN in like its 6th or 7th week; which is just nuts. I think that momentum will carry it to victory in the end.
TELEVISION
Best TV Comedy
1. Girls
2. Parks and Recreation
3. Modern Family
4. The Big Bang Theory
5. Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Who should win: The Big Bang Theory
Who will win: The Big Bang Theory
- This is the only Tv category that I will predict because it is the only one where I watch at least two of the shows nominated, and it happens to have my most beloved TV comedy of all time. The Big Bang Theory is very dear to my heart, and is the only show that I have watched continuously for the past 5 years. Thats right. I watched it before it was the most watched comedy on television but that is besides the point. Even though I have a clear bias, the intellectual part of me still thinks this show has the best chance to win. Girls won last year, and I just do not see them repeating, and parks and rec/modern family just isn't what it once was. Brooklyn Nine Nine is awful and Andy Samberg should stick to SNL/Lonely Island in my opinion. Whats left is my rock. My number one. My babe. I love love love the Big Bang Theory so much that there is a cardboard cut out of Sheldon Cooper in my bedroom. Scares the hell out of everyone. Speaking of Sheldon Cooper; the actor that portrays him, Jim Parsons, is my pick to win best TV actor this year also. But, take everything I say with a grain of salt as my expertise is movies not television.
Well I think that is it for this post regarding this years Golden Globes. I know I left a few categories out, but I thought that id just hit the major ones for this award show and save the 4 hour writing process for the Oscars themselves after I have seen all the contenders. Let me know if you agree or disagree; I'd love to hear some other opinions. Tune in on sunday night and watch the Golden Globes and see how accurate my predictions were. I'll most likely be doing an after show to highlight how good I was in making my picks. I had a lot of fun doing this post, and if you enjoyed reading it please let me know so that I can do more things like this. With that said, stay tuned until next time, and til then.....Have a splendid rest of your day.
- Big D
